Am I a total dork( well, by geek standards) for seriously considering wearing this to CONduit this year?

I usually try to do something anime and/or relatively current since I want to impress prospective customers, but I was just thinking I may not have enough time to do the costume I was planning with all my DA stuff, and of course Trapp Door was playing Flash Gordon( over-the-top camp cheesiness makes me HAPPY! Especially with vodka) on the monitors the other night. Maybe it was the amount of alcohol I had, but this just looked way cool and easy to construct around existing clothing. So what does everyone think?

BTW, here is the one I wanted to do( she's a fire-mage, so I'd get to play with flash paper, and I scored 4 yards of metallic red vinyl at half-price, which is still not very cheap, earlier in the year)---I guess I can hope that I will be able to get into Anime Banzai or Mountaincon this year and still do it for that, though that was a problem last year.

Technical question for the musical/DJ types
I've been listening to some CDs thinking about what music I want for my DA Fashion Show this year. What I want to know is, is it possible to edit a song when making a copy of a CD, or do you need some kind of special skills or equipment to do this? Basically, there's about 1-minute instrumental sequence at the beginning of a song that would flow a lot better with my show if it was only about 20 seconds. (Of course, I should probably double-check with Donna as to whether we're supposed to estimate 30 or 60 seconds per model, as that would also affect it).

I suppose I could also look around for an existing re-mix...AFAIK there isn't one, but there are many things I don't know, especially in music.

Am I the only one who tends to parse the Southwest Ambulance logo as an eagle-and-swastika when viewing it peripheral vision? I know it's not, but it seems like kind of an odd design choice( is needing an ambulance not a disturbing enough experience already? LOL), and I just wondered if anyone else thought so too.

Mind you, IIRC the Navajos had that design before the Nazis, so maybe they were just thinking "Southwestern theme", but Native Americans weren't noted for hauling people off in "ambulances", so...:P

For those that don't live here/haven't seen it, it's actually just a stylized S and W with a St. Andrew's cross under it, but it's not all that easy to sort that out at a distance.

    latest artwork
This first one is just an outfit I'm working on (hopefully for DA if I can get anyone to model for me. If not maybe I can just wear it to the festival one day), but I thought some might like to see it.

    Haha!
Usually, when telemarketers call, it just comes up on the caller ID as 'Anonymous' or 'unknown'.

The other day however, I got this:

    Writer's Block: Fearsome

The boogeyman, global thermonuclear war, being forced to eat broccoli—there's a lot to be afraid of when you're a kid. What was your biggest childhood fear?

    View 501 Answers

So many to choose from on this one. If you think I'm a nervous person now, you should have known me as a kid. A few possibilities:

    1. Outhouses and public toilets. My mom said this one started when I was very little and was scared by a wasp in an outhouse (probably correct, since apparently I had the habit when small of referring to outhouses/bathrooms I didn't like as "Bee potties"). For some reason, though, I ended up becoming much more afraid of unfamiliar bathrooms than I ever was of wasps or bees.

    2. Anyone wearing white, presumably because I had tons of birth complications and had to have lots of painful tests, IVs, and whatever else done while an infant, so I associated anyone wearing white with doctors, nurses, and NEEDLES. Lasted till I was about 7 or so and could distinguish doctors' uniforms from other white clothing. Come to think of it they don't usually wear white anymore.

    3. Probably the weirdest/funniest one...JELLO! Other kids loved it because it wiggled. I was terrified of it for the same reason and would start to cry whenever it was brought out for dessert. It's not scary now, but I still don't like to eat it.

    R.I.P. Mr. Whiskers
I've been feeling regret that I never took of a photo of him, so I think I at least owe the little guy a blog post. I didn't give him that name, but as he was born deaf and never knew what he was called, it didn't much matter to him. Deaf ferrets are often incorrigible biters( hearing a squeal of pain and thus knowing when to quit is an important part of ferret socialization), but this one never bit anyone as far as I know. Despite being such a sweetie, I was his third home---apparently he just never found the right people. He was only about 4 1/2-5 years old, equal to about a 45-50 year old human, but I had noticed he seemed to tire easily despite being in outwardly good health and happy. I suspect that, given his deafness and white coloring( which often goes with genetic flaws in ferrets), he may have suffered a congenital heart defect. He passed away peacefully in his sleep sometime yesterday afternoon.

I'm a little concerned for his cagemate Fizzgig. Depression in ferrets is practically a contradiction in terms, but she does seem restless and to be looking for him, and she is quite elderly for a ferret( 10 years), so losing her companion at that age is bound to be difficult for her. Asta, my likewise elderly cattle-dog mix, has been engaging her in some light (one-paw) wrestling, which is probably to the good.

    Writer's Block: Cookies

What is the strangest advice you've ever received from a fortune cookie?

Not so much "advice", but it creeped me out because I can't imagine why someone would make a fortune cookie that sounds like a threat---"You think it is a secret but it has never been one". Maybe it's just me, with my chronic nightmares of Orwellian dystopia and dread of both stalkers and interpersonal gossip, but to me that just is...*shudder*

    Writer's Block: DIY

MacGyver, hero of the tv show with the same name, is known for his resourceful use of ordinary household items to get out of an emergency situation. What's the most ingenious solution you've ever come up with in a pinch?

I sometimes think if people realized how much of what I do actually is improvised spur-of-the-moment, they would lose all respect for me as a designer. One of my best, however, in terms of coming up with something from nothing in a matter of minutes was several years ago when I was still dating Aaron, who had forgotten to bring a change of clothes to my house and was ( somewhat understandably) too embarrassed to go to the club in his work uniform. I knew, however, that if he went back to his house to change, his mother would keep him there till after closing time( yeah, I don't know why I put up with that so long, either) and I'd be stuck home alone. Desperate to save our evening out, I grabbed the first piece of fabric that came to hand off my sewing table and a box of safety pins, and, without any really clear idea where I was going with this plan, constructed what amounted to a black crepe toga. Worn with motorcycle boots, streaky eyeliner and the necklace of rat skulls and rusted metal I had previously made for him, it actually made for an interestingly suitable postapocalyptic effect, and he for his part was so pleased with it he insisted on pretty much wearing it every time we went out for most of the next year.

    A couple more recipes:

Not sure what to call this one, but it's what I ate for dinner last night---quite tasty and fairly simple and inexpensive---also vegan if that matters to you:
(Per person) 1 lg red potato, sliced
    2-3 tsp dried mushrooms
1/3 cup each green peas & mixed vegetables
    1 tsp garlic powder
    1 sprig rosemary
1 tsp dried basil( or use a small handful fresh if you've got it)
Stir fry in 2-3 tbsp olive oil with 1/2 cup water. The starch from the potatoes thickens the water into something like the clear sauce they use in Chinese restaurants( I'm guessing to get that effect you need to use red or yellow, i.e. waxy variety, potatoes, not russet). Sprinkle with black pepper and serve.

This is a nice treat that could come in extra handy if you know anyone who is diabetic or has a wheat allergy, since it has neither wheat nor refined sugar:

    Corn-Mochi Raisin Bread

2 cups blue or yellow corn meal
1 cup mochiko (sweet rice flour)
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp baking soda
    1/2 tsp salt
3 tsps each cinnamon and nutmeg
    1 tsp powdered clove
    2 eggs
2 cups almond milk + 1 cup water
2/3-3/4 cup agave nectar (to taste)
    1 cup raisins
1 tsp xanthan gum (you can get this at Whole Foods, but I suspect this recipe will work fine without it, actually, especially if you use a little more mochi and a little less corn)

Combine dry ingredients first in large mixing bowl, then add liquids gradually, stirring until thoroughly mixed. Pour batter into 3 4X8 loaf pans or about 18 muffin cups. Bake at 325 F until done ( golden brown on top, springs back when lightly touched in center, etc.) Note that this doesn't rise as much as regular muffins, expect consistency somewhere in between brownies and cake---but it tastes great.

I am thinking of actually trying to do the Dark Arts Fashion Show again this year( I know it seems way early since the official planning hasn't even started, but it never ends up being early enough)---not being in it felt kind of sad to me and I have some actual ideas again finally. However, the problem here is what it always is---in order to do this I will need models and a booth assistant lined up quite a long way in advance. I've got one or two people who said they'd be willing, but I need a total of at least five, one of whom has to be trustworthy enough to handle my cashbox for any hour or two. Anybody know any likely prospects or happen to be interested?

Found out my uncle was on TV ( coming home from the military) a couple of months ago and never told us:

The clerk at Joanne's today thought one of my own creations was a Vivianne Westwood. Kind of funny, but I guess it's a tribute to my professional skills. And an excuse to give out a business card.

    WTF?
The right side of my face is swollen to about twice the size of the other. No pain, but looks really weird and inhibits facial expressions and moving my head somewhat. Seems like an odd time to be allergic to anything( unless I've suddenly developed an allergy to the bath oil I've been using. Frustrating but it has happened before. I did notice it first when I got out of the tub.), but I don't know what else it could be...Anyone ever had something like this?

    Curry rice recipe
    3-4 tbsp Olive oil
    1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp each turmeric, ground cumin, and chili powder
1/2 tsp mustard (the dry powdered spice, not the stuff that goes on hot dogs)
1 cup cooked green peas plus small amount (1/3-1/2 cup) of liquid used to cook them.
1 1/2-2 cups cooked brown rice

Simmer spices in the olive oil for a few minutes, making a smooth, rich-smelling paste. Stir in the peas with their cooking juice( which should still be hot---adding cold liquid to hot oil is *dangerous*) and blend to a smooth broth over medium heat. Pour over rice and stir till evenly seasoned.

This tastes good, but for some weird reason it made me really crave a Del Taco burrito to go along with it---so maybe it would be good served as a side along with some kind of bean dish? Anyone have other suggestions?
